Tasting notes: Cherry Bakewell!

Great Taste Award Winner!

El Carmen is one of those coffees we keep coming back to. Grown by a close-knit group of producers in Huila, it shows off everything we love about Colombian coffee: sweetness, balance, and effortless drinkability. We first visited the producers in November 2022, and it’s been a steady relationship ever since.

In the cup, it’s classic — all the structure and clarity you'd expect, with a little extra richness. Think cherry bakewell: soft red fruit, almondy sweetness, and a biscuity edge that lingers. It’s not showy, just proper comforting, deeply moreish and a favourite.

We roast it to a medium profile to let that character shine — smooth and creamy as espresso, clean and composed through filter.

Meet the Producers

The Red Association

We have featured El Carmen from Raw Material since the first year of being a fully fledged coffee roastery, it's been with us through thick and thin, with a global pandemic thrown in for good measure. It's a coffee the entire team loves to drink, day in, day out, all year round; and one we see remaining on our offer list for a long time to come.

Raw Material position themselves and operate with the goal of achieving maximum impact for producers, to increase their access to the speciality market and in turn improve their livelihoods. On our first visit to Colombia in November 2022 we had the opportunity to spend a couple of days with the Raw Material team in El Carmen de Acevedo, the township where El Carmen comes from, where we met many of the producers whose coffee is blended together to make up the El Carmen we all know and love.

We saw first hand the impact of Raw Materials work, the tangible difference it made to the producers in this area, only achievable with concerted effort and a commitment to channeling capital back through the supply chain to those who need it.

We look forward to returning later this year to catch up with the Raw Material team and the producers, see what changes have been made and where the next set of challenges lie.

Not great

I had a batch of this earlier in the year and it was excellent - Gladly bought a kilo bag when it came back in stock a couple of months later. Unfortunately it was the same by name only - nothing like the original, thoroughly disappointing, I hope it was a one off...
