Back in 2017, a few 20-year-olds full of passion (and hyped on coffee) started a project.
Unit 25 in Cardiff Central Market is our original spot. You could even say the space that launched Hard Lines. A location, small in size but large in character, became an exciting stepping stone for us. And without it, we wouldn't be where we are now.
The original space, cowboy-built on a low budget but high enthusiasm, is the spot that kicked things off for us. It’s clear we’ve come a long way since then, but looking back, our younger selves deserve some credit. We worked hard and had a lot of fun while doing so.
On opening the market, we quickly learned that people love to connect over coffee. A quick meeting, a catch-up with friends, a date, or even a spontaneous chat with a stranger. In the Market, coffee is part of a routine; morning commuters, coffee breaks, lunchtime pick-me-ups and the end-of-day chancers.
The space became a bit of a hub, where coffee culture in Cardiff truly came to life. Familiar faces became regulars. The phrase “The usual?” started rolling off tongues. Our love for creating warm, welcoming spaces for our community started right here.
Only the OG fans will remember the chaotic magic of our early days—especially our unhinged Instagram content filmed right here at the stall. It was raw, real, and very us. Some of those legendary highlights are still up on our Instagram. A chaotic time capsule we can’t bring ourselves to delete.
Those years were filled with momentum and growth. But as Hard Lines steadily grew, our attention and energy steered in different directions. And so, after closing for almost a year, we decided it was time to roll up the shutters and revisit this unique site.
The new and improved stall is now a true representation of Hard Lines. The stall has been completely redesigned, reflecting everything we’ve learned over the years. It’s got all the charm of the original space, now paired with the refined aesthetic you’ll recognise from our Canton cafe. It’s confident. It’s intentional. It’s 100% Hard Lines.
Refined by time, shaped by experience and guided by a clearer sense of purpose. We’re proud of what this small hatch stands for.
