How to Brew Home Espresso
Brewing espresso at home is a rewarding experience that can yield rich, tasty shots with just the right balance of flavour and crema. With a few simple steps, you can master the art of espresso making at home.
What you'll need:
Home espresso machine (Sage, Breville etc)
18-20g freshly ground coffee or coffee beans
Tamper, Scales, timer and a cup

Step 1:
Prepare the Machine
Ensure your machine is turned on and has been preheated. This allows the components to reach the optimal temperature for brewing.
Step 2:
Dose the coffee
Measure out 18-20g of finely ground coffee using your scale. If using a bean-to-cup version, place the portafilter on the scale before and after grinding, and adjust your grinder accordingly.
Step 3:
Tamp the coffee
Evenly distribute the coffee grounds in the portafilter. Use a tamper to compress the grounds firmly, applying even pressure to create a level and consistent puck. A good tamping technique is crucial for an even extraction.
Step 4:
Brew the Espresso
Lock the portafilter into the machine's group head. Start your timer and initiate the brewing process. Aim for a brew time of about 25-30 seconds. The espresso should flow smoothly like warm honey, forming a rich crema on top.
Step 5:
Serve and Enjoy
Once the brewing is complete, turn off the machine and carefully remove the portafilter. Enjoy it straight or as a base for other coffee drinks.
Notes:
Experiment with grind size and dose to find the perfect balance for your taste.
Clean your portafilter and machine components regularly to ensure the best flavour.
If you notice any sour or bitter notes, consider adjusting the grind size or brew time for a better extraction.
